The People's Republic of China and Latin America: from indifference to engagement.

Trade between China and Latin America increased rapidly during the 1990s, but still represented a small fraction of total trade for both economic sectors. China was an indifferent economic partner to Latin America from 1949 to 1969. The relationship began to change in the 1970s. China's need for international recognition since Mao Tse-tung died in 1976 has contributed to its communication with Latin America. Trade obstacles such as language barriers still exist between the two regions.
