The secondary treatment of waste waters involves processes aimed at removing colloidal compounds, pathogens and unstable organic substances that consume the oxygen in receiving bodies of water. Diffused and mechanical aeration oxidize the wastewater during the active sludge processes. The liquid is then stored in ponds to hasten further oxidation of organic matters. The process is finalized using biological trickling filters to remove coagulated masses of aerated microorganisms.
