The droll and acute Nigel Dennis once wrote a book called Jonathan Swift: A Short Character. Now Swift walked tall even when he was not riding high, and unlike his friend Pope he was of normal stature. What Dennis was doing, of course, was alluding to that immensely popular and widespread literary gambit of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the character.
