The number of dual-earner married couples increased from 39% of all married couples to 61% from 1970 to 1993. This earnings shift, combined with a real earnings drop for men since the 1980s, has impacted the way that decisions within the family are made. Some evidence points to women taking over the role as primary earner. As defined by wages, the economic status of husbands and wives in families is compared.
