Parental alcoholism has been associated repeatedly with an elevated risk of negative outcomes in the offspring (Chassin et al., 1991; Reich et al., 1993; Sher, 1991; West and Prinz, 1987). Sons of male alcoholics (SOMAs), in particular, are reported to be at higher risk for externalizing problems (see Pihl et al., 1990, for a review), school difficulties (Knop et al., 1985; Rydelius, 1981; Zucker and Lisansky-Gomberg, 1986) and cognitive impairments (Bennet et al., 1988; Gabrielli and Mednick, 1983; Peterson et al., 1992).
