Australia faced a uniquely problematic situation in the late 1930s when foreign relations worldwide became strained. Japan's militarism and commercial competition, the developing fascism in Spain and Italy, and Hitler's invasions affected Australia's relationships with these countries, which were prominent customers for Australian products such as wool.
