Neuringer (2002) argued that variability in behavior is functional, adaptive, and essential to the development of novel, complex, and efficient behavior (Dewitte & Verguts, 1999; Neuringer, Deiss, & Olsen, 2000). Neuringer asserted that variability can be changed by reinforcement and be a product of extinction. Under extinction, responses that led to reinforcers in the past are made ineffective.
