In the animal kingdom, females often seem like shallow creatures. Female gray tree frogs are crazy for the male that can make the longest mating calls, which exhaust the poor fellow and require more energy per minute propor- tionally than a marathoner expends during a race. Peahens flock to the peacock with the most magnificent tail, an appendage that can be more than 5 feet long and costs the male dearly to grow and hoist behind him every mating season.
