Evanston's lesson: Research park can't go it alone

The Northwestern University/Evanston Research Park, a high-technology business incubator, has spawned a definitively low-tech concept: an urban entertainment complex featuring a 200-room hotel and a cinema multiplex.

"We thought we had one market; it turns out we had another one," says Ronald Kysiak, the research park's CEO.

Even as other Illinois municipalities and the city of Chicago seek to establish high-tech districts, Evanston is shelving its longtime strategy in favor of a traditional real estate development play ...
