The Venetian Senate decided to commission a new church on Oct 22, 1630 which would be dedicated to the Virgin in hopes that she would spare Venice from the dreaded plague that entered the country in 1629. A competition was held for the design of the new building, which was named 'S. Maria della Salute' in honor of the Virgin's power of intercession. Eleven architects submitted their projects, but only two were seriously considered. Architect Baldassare Longhena's design was eventually chosen....
