Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science recipient William Vickrey believed that economic theory can be used to enhance the quality of life. He was very concerned about the government and economists' acceptance of unemployment. He believed that economists should exert more effort in finding ways to remedy this problem. He wanted changes in the tax law to simplify it and to prevent the wealthy from taking advantage of loopholes in the law to reduce their taxes.
