Sixty years ago, on June 25, 1938, Congress struck a historic blow in the fight for decency in the workplace. The Fair Labor Standards Act set the standard work week at 40 hours, established a minimum wage, and restricted child labor.
The National Association of Manufacturers denounced the law as ``a step in the direction of communism,'' but it was welcome then and retains overwhelming popular support.
