Pres Bill Clinton issued Proclamation 7096 on May 14, 1998, designating May 16-22 of each year as National Safe Boating Week. This is in response to the prevalence of boating-related accidents throughout the country. The event aims to inculcate in the minds of all Americans the importance of observing safe boating practices such as wearing life jackets, abstaining from alcohol and drugs and following safe navigation guidelines.
