Quetzalcoatl was a god venerated throughout what is now called Mesoamerica. He was one of the most ancient and fundamental gods. His Nahuatl name means "plumed serpent," but he was known by other names in different parts of Mesoamerica: Quetzalcoatl was known as Kukulkan to the Maya people; Gucumatz to the Quiches of Guatemala; and Ehecatl to the Huastecans who lived on the Gulf Coast.
