Whither America's fellowships? (changing societal views of fellowship programs)

Support for fellowship programs, a primary asset of higher education, have increasingly diminished in the US. In the 1980s and 1990s, funding for such programs have increasingly been diverted towards public education. Scholars have also suffered more pressure from sponsors to produce visible outcomes.
