The existence of a history between the characters Beatrice and Benedick that is implied and then deflected in the play 'Much Ado About Nothing' by William Shakespeare is proposed. It is argued that deflection is in itself comedic and that the play centers around an underlying sense of loss which is indirectly communicated by the characters. It is also shown that Shakespeare contextualizes fiction by evoking another fiction which is not dramatized.
