THE SODIUM METAL industry remains solid as a variety of new uses have replaced the demand lost by the collapse of the lead gasoline additive market.
Since the elimination of leaded gasoline, which accounted for 83 percent of domestic consumption in the 1970s, the number of sodium producers in the US has shrunk from three to one. Ethyl Corporation phased out its sodium production in the mid-1980s, and RMI Titanium left the market in 1992. Domestic consumption currently stands at less than30,000 tons, down from a high of 150,000 tons in the 1960s.
