The UN has played a major role in the Middle East at key points in time beginning in 1947, when Palestine was partitioned and legitimizing the state of Israel. However, UN involvement in the Middle East has been orchestrated and controlled by the major powers responsible for its inception, principally the US. UN involvement in the Middle East since the late 1940s until 1997 and US influence on UN are evaluated.
