Tarragon Turns to 'White Knight' Marathon for $1.1 Billion Merger.

Calgary-based Tarragon Oil and Gas Ltd., which announced a US$1.1 billion cash-and-stock merger agreement with Marathon Oil Co. late Friday, sought out the company as a "white knight" to fend off two other unsolicited offers, company officials reported Monday.

Marathon's bid for Tarragon surprised some analysts who assumed the Canadian company was out of play after Unocal Canada Ltd. in April completed a C$297 million (US$208 million) stock-and-cash deal that gave Unocal a 28.7% share in Tarragon and three of the 11 seats on its board of directors in return for the bulk ...
