The struggle over the annexation of Texas was dominated by such figures as Thomas Hart Benton and and Martin Van Buren. These characters fought to keep the country together as well as their party, their constituents, and their own political parties. However, after all the events that took place, the Constitution determined the outcome. Some have even suggested that the annexation of Texas made the Civil War unavoidable. The Mexican War followed directly from the annexation.
