On the southern coast of Peru, sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, lies a series of desert plateaus known as pampas. This stony desert, blanketed by red-brown gravel, is a bleak place, broken only by river valleys etched from the mountains toward the sea. On one of these plateaus lies a collection of colossal shapes, zigzags, and drawings. Located in the Nazca Valley, this "art" has come to be known as the Nazca Lines.
