An 840-year record of fire and vegetation in a boreal white spruce forest.

From: Ecology | Date: January 1, 1998| Author: Larsen, C.P.S.; MacDonald, G.M. | Copyright information

Boreal fores fire and vegetation history was examined using an 840-yr fossil pollen and charcoal record from a site dominated by Picea glauca in Alberta, Canada. The record was created using contiguous 5-yr samples of annually laminated sediments from a 2.7-ha lake (Rainbow Lake A in Wood Buffalo National Park). Following a peak in the microscopic charcoal accumulation rate (CHAR), there is a sequence of peaks in sediment thickness and in 14 of the 21 common pollen and spore taxa. The general...

An 840-year record of fire and vegetation in a boreal white spruce forest.
Ecology ; INTRODUCTION Fire and climate are key processes that control boreal forest vegetation dynamics (Shugart et al. 1992). Fire frequency in the boreal forest has been studied using historical and dendrochronological records (Johnson 1992). Postfire vegetation dynamics have been studied using

Northern refuge: white spruce survived last ice age in Alaska.
Science News ; Genetic analysis of white spruce trees at sites across North America suggest that that species endured the harsh climate of Alaska throughout the last ice age, a notion that scientists have debated for decades. Picea glauca, the white spruce, is one of the most common trees in Alaska's forests
WOOD MACHINING PROPERTIES OF WHITE SPRUCE FROM PLANTATION FORESTS.
Forest Products Journal ; YVES FORTIN ROGER E. HERNANDEZ ABSTRACT The planing, shaping, boring, turning, and mortising properties of white spruce wood from a provenance trial and a natural stand were evaluated according to the ASTM D 1666-87 standard. Wood specimens were machined at 7 percent moisture content using

THE EFFECTS OF REDUCED AND OXIDIZED GLUTATHIONE ON WHITE SPRUCE SOMATIC EMBRYOGENESIS
In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology ; SUMMARY The glutathione-glutalhione disulfide redox pair was utilized to improve white spruce somatic embryo development. Mature cotyledonary-stage somatic embryos were divided into two groups (A and B) based on morphological normality and the ability of the mature somatic embryos to convert into
