SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation of Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns and named Archbishop Claudio Hummes of Fortaleza, Brazil, to replace him.
Cardinal Arns, 76, has served as archbishop of Sao Paulo since 1970. It was the world's largest archdiocese until it was split in 1989.
