Introduction

Although Sphagnum-dominated peatlands (peatlands) have sequestered atmospheric carbon (C) since the last ice age (Turunen et al. 2001), many peatlands are currently balancing between being sinks or sources for atmospheric C (Heikkinen et al. 2004). Whether a peatland emits or sequesters C is mainly determined by the balance between C evolving from the peat layers and the amount of C fixed by the upper thin layer of living vegetation, mostly made up by mosses from the genus Sphagnum.
