At some point between 1725 and 1740 the Newport clockmaker William Claggett fitted a musical eight-day clock with a moon dial inside a tall pine case with a japanned finish (Figs. 1, 2). It is one of six clocks he is known to have fitted into japanned cases, but intriguingly, in this instance the case was originally a brilliant powder blue with a slight shimmer, a finish not known on any other piece of eighteenth-century American japanned furniture.
