WASHINGTON -- Former Salvadoran soldiers have finally admitted what human rights groups and Catholic activists involved in Central America suspected all along: that the slaying of the four U.S. churchwomen on Dec. 2, 1980, was an authorized killing.

In March, two of the four soldiers serving 30 years for the murders of Maryknoll Srs. Ita Ford and Maura Clarke, Ursuline Sr. Dorothy Kazel and lay missionary Jean Marie Donovan, told representatives of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights that the killings followed "orders from above."
