As currently recognized, the genus Cercomacra consists of 12 species (Sibley and Monroe 1993, Bierregaard et al. 1997, Graves 1997) of medium-sized antbirds. The genus is poorly known, as evidenced by the discovery of two new species of Cercomacra and the elevation of another subspecies to species in the last decade (Fitzpatrick and Willard 1990, Bierregaard et al 1997, Graves 1997).
