Enlightenment thinkers point out that every citizen's perspective should be considered for the general good. However, political societies have created gendered roles of citizenship, placing masculinity onto the public sphere and femininity onto the private sphere. The Enlightenment ideal of male citizenship has been challenged by portrayals of women in stories by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Charles-Louis Montesquieu, and Germaine de Stael.
