Ivor Gurney: from triumph to tragedy.(Biography)

SCRATCH below the surface and there is usually an element of tragedy in the life of every creative artist--unfulfilled dreams, thwarted plans, intractable problems, too many roads not taken. But some artistic lives seem to contain more tragedy than others, and here I am thinking of the English poet and composer Ivor Gurney (1890-1937). A fascinating dual biography of Gurney and the English musicologist Marion Scott has unearthed much new information about him, and tells the dramatic story of his life with limpid prose and an empathetic viewpoint.
