San Pedro was a swampy bay when it was named by a Spanish explorer. Today it overlooks a major world port. Containers ship out now, but once sailors did, and that past remains in brick and clapboard buildings and polyglot restaurants--Italian, Japanese, Croatian, Cockney--that reflect the many nationalities that beached here. Recently a tide of construction has brought high-rise lofts, sleek hair salons, and a new name--the Historic Waterfront & Arts District--but the free-port atmosphere lingers in the Artwalk that offers wine and music at a dozen galleries each month.
