The idea has been around since Confederation. Why not have the three Maritime provinces form a political union? Supporters of the idea say union would make for more efficient government and would increase its political clout in Ottawa. (Whether or not the union would include Newfoundland is open to debate). Maritime union is particularly important now for two reasons. One, Quebec might separate leaving the Maritimes physically cut off from Canada.
