Prior to 1929, African elementary education in Kenya was primarily conducted by European Christian missionaries. In the 1920s, however, Kikuyu parents in Central Province became increasingly concerned about the quality and availability of the education provided by mission schools. Only a small number of Kikuyu children had access to the schools, and schooling was limited to basic literacy and vocational skills.
