Mexico is about the sixth largest oyster producing country. In recent years annual production has often reached nearly 1.5 million bushels, or a minimum of 50,000 tons of shelled oysters. A series of lagoons on Mexico's Gulf coast account for some 90% of that production, with the west coast accounting for the remainder of production. An overview of eastern Mexico's oyster industry is presented.
