The research that is the basis for this book grew out of the observation made by Dr. David Weeks, an Edinburgh neuropsychologist and psychotherapist, that the eccentrics of the world have received little scholarly attention. The result was the Eccentrics Project, a ten-year effort involving intensive interviews with one thousand "eccentrics" in Great Britain and the United States, accompanied by IQ tests, physical and mental health status questionnaires, and psycholinguistic analysis of the interview tapes.
