Sharif Husayn ibn Ali al-Hashimi took power of the Sharifate in Mecca in 1908. His leadership was formed from borrowed ideas, from his experience as an Arabian chieftain and from post-Ottoman social ideas. Husayn's vision borrowed from the ideas of a spiritual Sharifian or Arabian Caliphate; the importance of Arabs, specifically those in the Arabian Peninsula; and the role Hijaz should play in the polity.
