Writing is a very important tool for engineers but many of them consider writing an unnecessary distraction. Engineers typically find writing difficult because it requires clear thinking to write clearly, it requires a mastery of the English language and most engineers are insecure about their writing skills. However, engineers are probably better writers than they think and possess a sufficient grasp of English to be able to become good business writers. Five steps to effective business writing for engineers are outlined and evaluated.
