During the early years of the American space program, while NASA was flying John Glenn and Scott Carpenter and other astronauts around the earth in the Mercury spacecraft, the United States Air Force had its own large, pressurized, recoverable space capsule. Developed in secret, the Samos E-5 spacecraft flew with a reconnaissance camera, but it was clearly an Air Force effort to develop a manned military spacecraft to rival Mercury.
