Once the Cinderella among South Africa's provinces, KwaZulu-Natal today is the fastest growing region in the country. TOM NEVIN examines the causes of this phenomenal growth.

Hendrik Verwoerd, South Africa's National Party (NP) prime minister from 1958 to 1966, was fond of quoting Mark Twain: "The sun never sets on the British Empire," he would say to anyone who would listen, "because nobody trusts them in the dark."

This sentiment goes a long way in explaining why the province of Natal, today KwaZulu-Natal, was given so few crumbs from the Afrikaaner NP ...
