In Paris in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries certain dynasties of artists pursued the same profession for generations. Among those of Italian origin was the Caffieri family of which the founder in France was Philippe Caffieri (1634-1716). He was born in Rome, where he was singled out by agents of Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661), and, at the request of Louis XIV, Pope Alexander VII allowed him to travel to France. He arrived in Paris in 1660 and was employed at once in the Gobelins workshops, which, from 1662, were under the direction of Charles Le Brun (1619-1690). ...
