The Swedish EU Presidency said, on 2 July, that it is "gravely concerned" by the decision of Niger's President, Mamadou Tandja, to suspend the country's Constitutional Court, which "is a setback for Niger's democracy". The president suspended the court three days after he granted himself "exceptional powers". Tandja is thus preventing the court from expressing an opinion on such a decision taken in the absence of a National Assembly in exercise.
