Allen: Zero to Larry in 3 decades.(Arts and Lifestyle)

The pairing of comedy greats Larry David and Woody Allen sounds inevitable. But David wasn't Allen's first choice to play the grouchy physicist in his new film "Whatever Works."

"I wrote this many years ago for Zero Mostel," Allen said in a recent interview, sitting next to David in New York's Regency Hotel.

Mostel died in 1977, the year Allen's "Annie Hall" came out. If not for a pending actors strike, Allen's abandoned script would have stayed in a drawer.

Instead he updated it.
