What should we make of the variety of approach and subject-matter manifest in these four books on Early Modern England? Do we welcome it as evidence of a healthy diversity within the historical profession? Or do we regret it as representing the inexorable process of academic specialisation and fragmentation? Frequently these books argue for the juxtaposition of subjects which specialisation has kept apart. Yet they also often pull away from each other.
