Transvaginal ultrasound has been used to diagnose the cause of vaginal bleeding, which can be either a side effect of hormone therapy or a sign of disease. And some researchers are investigating the tests potential as a screening tool to find hidden uterine disease in older women. But a new study found that screening with ultrasound might cause more harm than good. The study was funded by several government agencies and conducted by Robert D. Langer, M.D., and colleagues (New England Journal of Medicine, 18 December 1997).
