Bloodthirsty black flies are biting viciously now. These tiny, humpbacked expletives, so beneficial to fish and birds, are miniature vampires capable of torturing the unprotected.
Next time one tries to bite a chunk out of your flesh, kill it and note their sexual differences: Females have small, widely separated eyes; males have big eyes almost touching in the front of their heads. This more frontal eye position is typical of a narrowly focusing predator. It also helps males better locate females.
