Ali Khamanei's nomination for Iran's marja'-i taqlid, or "source of emulation," in 1994 was part of a process that began with the death of the Ayatollah Araki Khomeini in 1989. Constitutional requirements and low religious status were not sufficient to overcome Khamenei's political clout to make an initial bid for marja'iya, but Khamenei's attempt shows Iran's leadership represents a compromise between traditional and modern principles.
