Maugham was dressed in gray slacks, a tweed jacket, and black moccasins, and he wore them with the upperclass Britisher's knack of making even new clothes appear faintly shabby and disreputable. Not that there was ever anything bohemian in Maugham's dress or manner. He always played the part of the reserved, well-to-do, top-drawer Englishman - a type he satirized mercilessly in his stories. Sometimes he wore a monocle.
