Australia began diversifying its markets in 1950, so much so that Japan replaced Britain as the largest importer of Australian goods in the late 1960s. New Zealand remained primarily dependent on trade routes with the United Kingdom long afterwards. This dependence arose from New Zealand's small size and lack of bargaining power. An analysis of how these conditions led to the renegotiation of the Ottawa agreement in 1958 is presented.
