The Jews have exhibited an surprisingly rapid upward social and economic mobility since World War II. This rise in the status of the Jews has been most evident in academic circles or academia. By the late 1980s, Jews had served as presidents of the two most prestigious US scientific universities, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology, and leading state institutions and Ivy league schools. By 1993, Jews headed five of the eight Ivy League institutions.
