Intonation and iambic pentameter.

The examination of intonation when reading poetry explains why poets preferred to use iambic pentameter to other rhyme forms for over 400 years. Iambic pentameter allows for more control of how the verse is spoken, making poetry more interpersonal. A linguistic understanding of intonation provides insight into how poets create effects in their works. Studying the meter of poetry alone cannot explain the preference because it does not bring out difference in rhythm between prose and poetry.
