Niklas Luhmann favors regarding literary criticism as an art rather than a science. The same would hold true of economics, law, education and theology. Luhmann is not interested in hierarchies but would classify all fields which arrive at knowledge empirically as sciences, while those devoted to aesthetics and values are arts.
